Creative Emergings

Since coming to Van City, I feel like all of a sudden I've been plopped into the middle of a creative epicenter. This seems to be especially true at my church as evidenced by our recent coffee house event a couple Saturdays ago. So many people write music, skillfully play instruments, create fabulous paintings, write stories... it's amazing! I even live with one who does pretty much almost all of the above.

What's been interesting as of late is that poetry seems to be the common theme in my life. Wherever I turn, there is poetry. I've read my friend's works in her blog, another friend has shared quite a few of his with me, the lyrics of some of my favorite songs I feel are works of poetry that have been accompanied by music. As such, I've felt inspired to write some of my own.

Nothing is finished yet. One is in it's middle stages whereas there are a couple that are just floating around that I hope to catch and display once this 1st one is completed. Maybe I'll share some here. We'll see ;)

Outside of poetry, I've done little with my other creative outlets. I haven't played much piano nor guitar. The only piano I've played was at church and also for a friend at the coffee house (we are planning to get together and make some more music in a few days though which will be fun). The only drawings I've done are doodles on looseleaf during class (it prevents me from falling asleep... but then sometimes I get too distracted drawing that I don't end up paying much attention anyway...). I did, however, scan and upload a drawing on my page at deviantART which was pretty cool (if you want to look, click on the link in the right column). I've been camera-less for over a year now so no new fun pictures.

If school wasn't such a deterrence right now, I would be gung-ho with all of these. But alas, I'm in my final 2 weeks of school-craziness and it's especially in these times when I want to be creative. Le sigh.

The only positive thing about all of this is that I'm actually allowing myself to be creative again. I've stuffed it in a corner and let dust cake on it for so long that I've almost forgotten what it was like to take the time to sit and think and let it all flow out. The beauty of not letting school take over your life, not having a TV, and spending less time on Facebook I guess, lol.

Cheers to Dad...

Father
Definition: a male parent.
Names by which I call him: Dad, お父さん (o-to-u-san), パパ (papa)

It was my dad's birthday on Tuesday. He turned 5_ years old which is sort of crazy when I think about it. Soon he will be 60. Then 70. Then 80 (I hope)? I digress.

One time at small group from church, we talked about our fathers and how they have shaped the way we view God. We worked through some questions that catalyzed our thinking on what our fathers were like. Through reminiscing and hearing other people's stories I realized, "Wow, I have a pretty awesome dad."

So, the following list are tidbits about him in remembrance and celebration of the greatest dad ever.

1. A hard-working potato farmer who never failed to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table.
2. A lover of sports. He used to be more active in his younger days playing baseball and curling among other things, but currently he golfs, enjoys fly fishing, and ping pong with my mother.
3. He's an 18-year old in an middle-aged body. When my sister and I were younger, we would wrestle with my dad and he would do the silliest things like chase us on all fours like a bull, lol.
4. He loves driving. Living in the prairies, I suppose that is a must. Even when I was living in Edmonton without a car, he would always drive up to come and get me for Christmas and said he enjoyed the scenery.
5. He's a jokster and always says, "Eh?" in social situations.
6. In high school, the boys in my class who would golf with him in league would tell me he's cool.
7. I remember one Valentine's Day, he bought fancy candy and a card with a short but personal message for both my sister and I.
8. When I got my learner's at 14, he was the one who willingly and patiently taught me how to drive. My mom refused.
9. Sometimes during the summer, I would join my dad in making the rounds to the fields making sure the pivots were working properly and stuff like that. Some nice father-daughter bonding moments :)
10. He's not very good at truthfully expressing his feelings in words, but the way he sulks when I say I'm not able to come home or something like that I can tell he misses me.
11. He is a handyman of sorts and can fix pretty much almost anything around the house.
12. He loves new technology and the internet has always fascinated him. Whenever I come home, he's always excited for me to teach him something new. He even started taking classes to learn how to internet better.
13. He really enjoys singing hymns (in Japanese of course) to the piano so whenever I come home and plays, he sings quite joyously and always seems pleased and in a good mood once we're done.
14. He is a good cook! When my mom went away to Japan for a few months, he made almost everything from scratch. It was healthy and tasted good too. No KD in our household.
15. Whenever I got sick, he would always make me a hot cup of ginger and honey or lemon and honey tea.
16. One name he absolutely hated us using was "daddy." I don't know why, but he did not like it at all when we called him that. I like saying "papa" better anyway.
17. The first time I ever rode a rollercoaster (which was 16 by the way), he wanted to ride it too and he did. He's quite adventurous like that.

There's of course many more but short is sweet.

Cheers to you, Dad. I love you.
